Patch Tool

I recently checked out a computer course, and guess what they were doing? Photoshop And i looked around and i was amazed at how many people didnt know how to use the patch tool. (Theres also actually 2 alternatives to using the patch tool. Read on see them) So heres the tutorial:

Ok lets say you need a picture of PURE grass put you only have this picture:

Most people wouldn't know what to do. Well there really are 3 ways of doing this. Ill start with number one.

PATCH TOOL- FIRST WAY

Step 1: Open the image in photoshop.

Step 2: Select the patch tool

Step 3: Draw around your object, in this case it's the cat, and use the patch tool as if it is a lasso tool. Try to stick to the lines. Zoom in a bit if it is necessary.

Now you should have the classic "marching ants" like so

Step 4: Click and hold the INSIDE of the selection you made. Once you are holding it, drag either to the left or right. Grass will appear instead of the cat. It shifts the image at the point where you want. Don't worry if it doesn't look too good now. When you deselect it instantly blends it for you.

FINAL:

CLONE STAMP TOOL- SECOND WAY

This way is a little more difficult in my opinion personally.

Ok so we have our pic.

Step 1: Select the clone stamp tool

Step 2: Near the top, change your brush to something like this

Step 3: Click and hold ALT on your keyboard and click somewhere on the grass NEAR the cat.

Step 4: Click ok the cat. ONE CLICK AT A TIME. DONT HOLD AND DRAG. It will slowly disapear like so:

Step 5: Once you have a bit of the cat covered like above, click and hold ALT again and click somewhere else. Make sure you keep using alt to get a new brush when you are covering a picture so it doesnt come out repetative.

THIS IS WRONG:

If you do it correctly you should get something like this:

FEATHERING- THIRD WAY

Ok so again we have our little picture:

Step 1: grab your lasso tool

Step 2: Set the feathering to about 25.

Step 3: Select around ANYTHING BUT YOUR CAT. Any other part of grass.

Step 4: Press Ctrl +C and then Ctrl + V

Step 5: Grab your move tool and move the section over your cat.

KITTY! x3 eeee.... but not as good as butterflies ;D

I usually use the 2nd and third ways, but the patch tool seems like the most effective =D you can do the same with the shadow the cat leaves behind, right?

Patch Tool

I am having problems with the brush tool. Sometimes it works and other times it doesnt. I have tried on a transparent layer and a white layer. What am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions or tips? I am using CS4.

thanks
Joanne

Re-install CS4. Make sure it's updated.

It should always work unless your settings are off, if it's a brand new install then reinstall like Nigh suggested. If the problem just started you probably accidentally changed a setting - check your preferences and make sure you also reset your brush settings.
